What Is a Cycle Rating?

A "cycle" is one complete operation: the lock goes from locked to unlocked and back. In testing, a machine does this continuously at a controlled speed, with a controlled force, thousands of times. The cycle rating is the number of operations completed before any component — the latch, the spring, the lever mechanism — shows measurable wear or degradation beyond acceptable tolerances.

Why Higher Ratings Matter (Even for Residential Use)

A typical interior door in a home is opened and closed maybe 8–10 times a day. At that rate, even a 100,000-cycle lock has a theoretical life of over 27 years. So why do manufacturers aim for 200,000 or 500,000 cycles? Because cycle testing is done under ideal conditions — controlled temperature, no lateral stress, perfect alignment. Real-world use includes slammed doors, misaligned frames, humidity changes, and children hanging on handles. Higher-rated locks have components designed to absorb these stresses without premature failure.

How Cycle Testing Is Actually Done

The lock is mounted in a test rig that simulates a door. A motorised arm operates the handle and turns the key (or thumb-turn) at a rate of roughly 10 cycles per minute. At set intervals — typically every 25,000 cycles — the mechanism is inspected for spring fatigue, latch engagement depth, handle play (wobble), and key operation smoothness. The test continues until either a component fails the tolerance check or the target cycle count is reached.

Indian and International Standards

The relevant Indian standard for mortise locks is IS 6607, which specifies minimum cycle counts for different grades. International equivalents include ANSI/BHMA A156 (US), EN 12209 (Europe), and AS 4145 (Australia). These standards don't just measure cycles — they also test the lock's resistance to forced entry, corrosion, and fire performance. A lock that meets multiple standards has been tested more thoroughly than one that meets only a single standard.
